The “Joker Healy” Trail
Michael “The Joker” Healy, a local character who was known for his nimble feet in the dance halls of the area. You too will need nimble feet as you dance on the pedals to crest some of the climbs on this trail. Climbs and descents on bohereen’s and gravel track is what this trail is all about. You’ll take on two iconic mountains steeped in history and encounter monuments dating back to 3000 bc. The views and scenery are amazing as is the cycling terrain.
The “Josie McDermott” Trail
A relatively flat trail with some small hills. You’ll be guided along by-roads, bohereen’s and tracks through Counties Roscommon and Sligo. This trail will give you a real sense of what rural Ireland of the past was like as very little has changed in this area over the years. Josie McDermott, a local man whom the trail has been named after was a major figure in contemporary Irish music. As you cycle along the old Ballyfarnon Road, you might mistake the whistling of the hedgerows with the sound of the tin whistle that is the legacy of Josie.
The “Miners” Trail
Cycling this trail will retrace the footsteps of local miners that for four hundred years made their way by the shortest possible route to their employment at the Arigna Coal Mines. You will see disused mines with their derelict buildings and abandoned equipment which pays homage to the generations who spent their lives working here. This trail involves quite a bit of climbing as you cycle the by-roads and tracks up the mountain but once the hard work is done you will be rewarded with some flowing descents. The scenery is amazing as are the views, on a clear day you can see twenty seven lakes.
The “East” Trail
Cross country single track through beautiful woodland and countryside. Cycled slowly, this trail is easy to negotiate and offers the best of what xc cycling has to offer. Up the pace and it becomes fast, flowing and technical in places with punchy climbs and exciting descents.
